LANA is a not-for-profit law group made up of individual lawyers dedicated to helping animals through the law and also to helping people who help animals.
LANA’s founder, Nora Constance Marino, is an attorney who is also an animal rights activist. Nora learned of the plight of animals early in her legal career, and did everything she could by using the law to make things better for animals and people dedicated to their well being. In 2014, Nora spearheaded the well known “Kaporos” case, a case which sought to end a horrific annual animal slaughter that involves the killing of tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of chickens every year on public streets in Brooklyn, New York, in the name of a religious ritual.
For years, people have contacted Nora seeking legal help with animal issues. Many of these potential clients have little to no money; some need to be defended in a lawsuit, some need to prosecute a lawsuit, and some need legal advice and guidance but cannot afford it. Nora has done a tremendous amount of pro bono work over the years for animal issues, but sadly, she has also had to turn people down due to the financial impossibilities. Nora never liked saying no to someone seeking help for animals, or for an animal issue, so LANA was born.
LANA’s mission is to fight for animals on all levels within the legal system. Whether it is using the legal system for large cases, such as trying to end an animal-abusing industry, or whether it is for small cases, like helping one person help one cat, or whether it’s challenging anti-animal laws on constitutional or other issues, LANA wants to be there, to jump in, and fight for animals in our Courts.
